Lesson Structure

授業構成

Each lesson we teach is tailored specifically to the skillset and ability of the students present. Here are some of the common aspects we may cover in lessons:

  • Basic Techniques   基本き

Basic techniques in Karate cover the four fundamental areas that build the martial art. These are strikes, blocks, stances and kicks. With a variety of moves to learn, practicing these techniques will improve body strength, stability and flexibility while providing a foundation for your Karate journey.

  • Kata   型

In Karate, Kata are combinations of moves that vary in length, from 20 moves up to 50+. We have a core set of 8 kata that will carry students through to black belt, gradually increasing in complexity. Kata can be a fun challenge to test your knowledge of the martial art and really show off your technique. Our instructors are thorough in providing all the support you need to learn kata at your own pace.

  • Sparring   組み手

Putting Karate skills into practice is the goal of sparring. Here you partner up one-on-one with another student to gain experience in fighting with an opponent. Sparring is available only from yellow belt and up and is closely monitored by instructors to ensure safety of students. Sparring is also kept strictly light contact and protective hand mitts and leg pads are worn.

  • Mat Work   床面実習

At Kumade Karate we have the luxury of using padded floor mats to practice floor fighting and takedowns. These can be particularly useful to learn as taking down an opponent can be an quick and effective way to disarm a confrontation and give you the opportunity to ensure your own safety. Similar to sparring, this is practiced in a safe and controlled environment and students are partnered up with others of similar build and height.

The key focus of all our sessions is ensuring that our Dojo is a safe and supportive environment to learn. We understand that beginning a martial art may be daunting, so we strive to ensure that you have the ability to learn at your own pace.

Special Lessons

Learning Karate should be a fun journey, so we have occasional lessons to celebrate public holidays and other events. For example, we have:

A Karate Christmas

We celebrate the public holiday of Christmas with a festive lesson the Tuesday/Sunday prior. With Karate-themed games, Christmas dress-up and treats to give out, we conclude each year with a fun, active celebration.

Birthday Celebrations - The Circle of Pain

Around the birthday of each student, there is an optional special sparring session where the birthday student spars the whole class one at a time, including the instructors. Despite the somewhat ominous name, the circle of pain is a fun sparring session at the end of the class where you can test your sparring ability. It's all in good faith and there is no pressure to take part.
