What We Teach

Respect

Embedded into Karate are the fundamental values of respect and etiquette that are common in Japanese culture. It is a core part of our club ethos to show respect to one another and our Dojo at all times.

Self-Defence

In a volatile world, it is important to be able to defend one's self should the need arise. The focus of Karate is not about bringing harm to others, but ensuring your own protection. It's never too late to learn how to defend yourself!

Confidence

Working your way up through the grades in Karate is excellent for developing confidence in yourself, your fitness and your ability to keep yourself safe. It's also an excellent challenge to strive for!

Hear What Our Students Have To Say:

"I only started 2 years ago, but since joining I've made new friends and improved my confidence, fitness, strength and flexibility. I'd urge those with an interest to have a go, whatever age or ability."

David, 46 - 5th kyu blue belt

"I really enjoy coming to classes and Karate has really helped me with my flexibility and fitness."

Julie, 19 - 2nd kyu brown belt

"If someone tried to hurt me, I would know how to defend myself. I really enjoy it at Karate!"

Seb, 8 - 4th kyu purple belt

Frequently Asked Questions

よくある質問

Do I need any prior experience in Martial Arts?

No! Prior experience isn't necessary. Whether you have experience or not, we'll support you in your Karate journey at your own pace.

What should I wear to lesson?

There's no need to buy a fancy Gi for your first few lessons. Wear something you are comfortable moving around in, such as sports wear. You can always buy a Gi if you decide to take up the sport on a regular basis!

What are the benefits to Karate?

Not only is it excellent exercise to keep fit, Karate also helps you learn your own body and improve flexibility, strength and stability. The self-defence techniques we teach may one day be used to save your life!

Do you run through school holidays?

Yes! Our classes run year-round, even during school holidays. The only time we take a break is around Christmas time and New Years, but we return the first week in January, ready to burn off all those Christmas chocolates and dinners!

What ages do you teach and is there a minimum age?

We have students from a wide variety of ages and backgrounds. Each lesson is catered towards the students who are present, so all ages are welcome! For insurance reasons, the minimum age we can register is 5 years.

Are there any additional costs?

Every lesson is £5 and there is a license required for insurance purposes that costs £18/year for under-16s and £20/year for over-16s. Any other costs are entirely optional, such as uniforms and sparring equipment. We don't want cost to be a limiting factor in learning Karate, so don't feel pressured to go all-in on gear!

Do I need to be super fit to start?

Not at all! Our drive at Kumade Karate is to teach self-defence techniques to anyone who is willing to learn and we encourage learning at your own pace. You don't need to be a regular gym-goer or Mr. Olympia to attend a class - we take the capabilities of every student into account when teaching and only ask that you give every lesson your best shot.

About us

Established in 2015 as a family run karate club, Kumade Karate is headed by 4th Dan Sensei Gary who has over 17+ years of experience in the martial art. Prior to the opening of Kumade Karate, Sensei Gary was a successful instructor at other karate clubs too. Over the years, the team has grown to a group of 4 instructors with a combined karate experience of over 60 years. Our instructors pride themselves on having the enthusiasm, drive and technical knowledge to be able to get the very best from our students.

One of our main aspirations at Kumade Karate is to ensure that the sport is accessible to any and all who wish to attend. Our dojo is a safe and inclusive environment where anyone can come to learn - no matter what you may think holds you back, we will work together to overcome challenges and obstacles that lie in your path. All you need is the commitment to succeed.

Our aim is to teach people the ways of self defence and create a safe, fun learning environment to do so. The focus of our students being able to build their confidence and provide a sense of accomplishment is a key role in their karate journey and it is our mission to help them achieve this as their Sensei’s! Karate is much greater than a hobby in our opinion, it is a journey that will stay with you for the rest of your life!
